Introduction to Me

(photo information: personal photo of me in Prague; December 2016)
Hi, See that photo? That's me. I'll be the one posting and updating you on this blog. Now, you should probably know a little bit about me before jumping right in, right?
Let's start with the stock college intro. Hi, my name is Elizabeth. I'm a senior from Tulsa, OK. I'm an art history major. Yes, we really do exist. Although there is only about 8 of us at OU and 5 are graduation this semester. So you know one! Congratulations.
I’ll be graduating this spring and by the end of this semester I’ll know what the future holds. Unfortunately, I have to wait until March/April to hear back from the graduate programs I applied to. Here is the obligatory list of places I applied: University of Houston, Texas Christian University, University of Texas (I know, sacrilege), University of Delaware, Case Western Reserve University, and Georgetown University.
I guess I’ll tell you a little about what I’ll be doing with me degree (hopefully). I want to work in a museum, curating exhibits, doing research, and engaging the public with art. Ideally, I would work with modern and contemporary art, that’s actually what I want to study in grad school: modern and contemporary art along with public sphere theory.
The coolest thing I did last semester was write a paper on the 1972 Edition Olympia [Ghmb]. What is that you ask? It’s a collection of 28 or 35 posters (depending on which series you are counting) that the Organizing Committee for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games commissioned and produced as a means of advertising the upcoming events and producing revenue to fund them. I have over 20 pages about it if anyone is interested. Some of the posters in the series will be on display in the Fred beginning in February. You should go see Fine Print!; Posters from the Permanent Collection. Also, that was shameless self-promotion considering I wrote the labels for and curated a section of the exhibit. Humble brag acknowledged. But, seriously, it’s going to be cool.
Currently, other hobbies include reading (mostly about art), watching TV (favorites include the Great British Baking Show and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and sleeping (you can never get enough). I also enjoy knitting, drawing, and having a strong stance in favor of the Oxford Comma. Actually, I might be a grandma.
Also, I plan on making as many of my post titles references or puns throughout the semester. Please try to guess my references or appreciate the puns.

  1. Shameless self-promotion about anything to do with ART sounds good to me, Elizabeth! And please let me know about any exhibits going on that would be good to include in the class; I learn about a lot of events by following lots of OU-related Twitter accounts, but of course the best events are the ones that are connected with actual students in the classes. And I hope you will find a project for this class that will be a boost to your art explorations... there is so much art inspired by mythology, folk art traditions, and on and on. On the subject of Prague, for example, here's a book illustrated by Jan Matulka! Czechoslovak Fairy Tales ... more on Matulka: Wikipedia: Jan Matulka :-)

  2. Hi Elizabeth!
I’m also from Tulsa! Wow – it seems like there are many of us. Congrats on graduating! It will be cool to see where an art history major ends up. Can’t wait to see your pun references all semester! This class calls for creative people, and I feel that you’ll have no problem in that department. Best of luck on your art journey!

  3. Hi Elizabeth!
I love that you're interested in art and its public sphere. Modern and Contemporary works are my favorite as well. I started at OU as an art major, but switched to Biology after a semester. I have always loved the idea of curating and designing museum exhibits that educate and influence the public. I hope you get into the masters program of your dreams and go on to make the coolest exhibits the world has ever seen!

  4. Hey Elizabeth!

It is so interesting that you are an art history major! I respect you all a lot because art is so important to our culture and it is under appreciated in our society today. Working in museums sounds like it would be really cool and rewarding. I wish you luck in getting into graduate school! Those all sound like great schools.

  5. Hi Elizabeth!

I'm from Owasso just north of Tulsa! It's always nice to meet other people from the 918. I love that you are an art history major. I'm a science major so kind of on the opposite ends of the spectrum there but I have a huge appreciation for the arts. I have danced and played music my whole life and I'm interest in hearing more about the kind of art that you study! Your plans for after college and going onto grad school sound amazing, and I can't wait to see where you end up!

  6. Hi Elizabeth!
Art History sounds so interesting! I am a microbiology major so that could not be farther from what I studied. I think it is awesome that you are going to graduate school for that as well. As our society continues to change I think engaging the public with the arts is such a crucial activity and I am glad to know someone now who is doing it! I can't wait to read some of your posts this semester!

  7. Hi Elizabeth! My aunt actually lives close to Tulsa in Broken Arrow. I think it’s awesome that you are an art history major. I really like going to different museums when I visit other cities and I think it’s so cool that one day you will work in a museum creating and curating all the exhibits people come to see. I bet you have probably been to the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa but if you haven’t you should definitely check it out.

  8. Hi, Elizabeth!

Way to own your position as an Art History major! it sounds like a topic about which you're deeply passionate, and I admire that. I think FJJMA is one of our campus's most under-appreciated gems; I will have to visit sometime this semester and try to find your work! I'm sure that the Olympic poster series is incredible; I'm a big fan of vintage-inspired National Park posters, though I'm sure they're not as cool as your originals!

  9. Hey Elizabeth! I haven't ever met an Art History major, so it is nice to meet you! That is awesome that you are pursuing a master's degree after you graduate in the Spring. I am graduating in May 2018 too! Also, I really love puns, so I will definitely be checking your blog to see what puns you post next.

  10. Hey Elizabeth! Your major sounds pretty interesting! I think it's super cool that you want to work in a museum later on and deal with contemporary art and things like that. I love museums and exploring different things like that. Good luck with getting into grad school! I'm sure you will hear back with positive messages :) omg I love puns and I love that your blog will feature many!

  11. Hi Elizabeth! You seem so interesting. Your major is one that I have not learned much about, but I do love art, so I feel like I could get on board with it! I also love how you included humor in your post. I really appreciate the light-hearted and funny side notes you through in. I also want to encourage you to include as many puns as you see fit!

  12. Hi Elizabeth! It’s nice to meet an art history major. One of my brother’s good friends was an arts history major from OU and now works in a museum in Claremore! I am sure you will be able to work for whatever museum you want. It would be cool to see what kind of exhibits you would make. And who doesn’t love sleeping!

  13. Hi Elizabeth! Wow, your career choice sounds so interesting! It seems like a great and different path that holds so many different types of options and experiences. It is really cool that you think you know what you want to do. I know so many seniors who are still at a loss, so good job and congratulations! I am sure you will do wonderful. You seem like you really have things together, and you seem like a really interesting person overall. My mom also knits, and she has been teaching me as well, and I think that it is a really cool hobby to have. We never run out of hats at my house!

  14. Elizabeth,

Best of luck on your graduate program applications! I'm currently in the process of studying for the LSAT, so I understand what a process it can be. I also love that you're an art history major... you're an elusive people here on OU's campus! I have a number of friends that are interested in art history as a general topic, but none that chose to major in it.

  15. Elizabeth,

Being a museum curator sounds awesome! I feel like that’s one of those jobs most people don’t even think about then they think about jobs, and you’re going to get to do that, how cool! I also love the Great British Baking Show, it’s way calmer and nicer than American cooking shows, in my opinion. The Oxford Comma is absolutely necessary, I completely agree. After that last line about post titles being references and puns I’ll definitely need to check some of those out. Congratulations of graduating, and good luck with grad school!

  17. Hey Elizabeth! I really admire your major! It's different and unique! And I didn't know there are only 8 art history majors! That's crazy!!! You sound very passionate about what you're interested and I love how you're so sure about what you want in the future! I wish I could say the same! I hope you get in (maybe you already got in!) to grad school and continue your passions! Good luck with the rest of the semester!

  18. Hi Elizabeth!

Ooh, Art History. I've always wondered about majors like that - not in a bad way, but more of "I wonder what the major is like!" It's interesting to learn about what you are doing and plan to do in your field.

References and puns are always appreciated. I make no promises about getting the references, but a good pun should never go unappreciated (or it should at least get a good groan).

  19. Hi Elizabeth! I think it's awesome that you're able to make a career out of something you're so evidently passionate about. I believe in the old saying that if you love your job, you'll never work a day in your life! I hope that you're hearing back good things from the schools that you applied to. I know it's got to be a stressful process, so good luck!

  20. Hi Elizabeth! It's nice to meet you and see your passion for art. I actually have a friend who is studying some form of art here at OU, but she wants to be an art teacher. Good luck in your journey to graduate school, I know it can be a stressful time waiting to hear back. I also think its cool that you are one in eight of people graduating with your degree from OU, this is something unique you will always share. Anyways, good luck in the course, I look forward to reading other stuff !

  21. Hi Elizabeth! Congratulations on graduating this spring. It's great that you're so passionate about your major and future career. I absolutely agree with you about the Oxford comma. It's necessary, makes things more clear, and looks better. Good luck with the end of semester and any finals.
